Little Tern Research in Lithuania

The following information is regarding the cooperative research conducted in Lithuania.

Date: July 20th -30th, 2016
Project members: Takashi Fujii Research Manager
         Ryoh Murofushi Field Researcher
Petras Kurlavičius Professor of Biology, Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences

This year we conducted research in Jurbarkas, the same site as
in 2015. During our survey we confirmed 4 individuals with
geolocators attached but due to being late in breeding season
these individuals were not nesting. We typically use bow-nets to
capture nesting individuals but this time we attempted
recapture by use of mist-nets. Though multiple attempts were
made, we were unsuccessful in retrieval.

Although the task of retrieving geolocators was halted, we were successful in attaching another 4 units as
well as 3 GPS logger devices purchased by donations from our supporters. We now have 21 little terns
with geolocators and 3 with GPS units for a total of 24 birds released in Lithuania's Nemunas River. In order
to insure success for next year, we must think of alternative recapture methods.

Jurbarkas is an important area for the breeding of little terns. Fisherman and other river visitors often
enter nesting sites unknowingly. Cautionary signs were posted in areas used for nesting to gain the
understanding of local residents.
